Tanzania: Zanzibar Touts Strides in Training Sector
The Minister of EDUCATION and Vocational Training Simai Mohamed Said revealed the accomplishments of his portfolio on Monday, but acknowledged some challenges that urgently need to be addressed.
He said that while President Hussein Mwinyi’s first year at the State House had been admirable, all was not well.
“Thanks to the impressive implementation of various educational programs, we have a lot to celebrate. But we have to work harder to master the remaining challenges,” said Minister Simai at a media briefing on the ministry’s performance since Dr. Mwinyi on November 2, 2020.
Simai mentioned that President Mwinyi’s ministry achievements to date have included increasing student numbers at all levels of education, providing teaching and teaching materials for teachers and students, strengthening teacher training and reviewing curricula.
Further successes of the past year are the improvement of vocational training, stronger partnerships with various local and foreign educational development partners as well as good planning for the construction of further buildings to overcome school jams.
The ministry has also managed to improve the learning environment for students or children with special needs by adding ramps and also a hundred hearing aids, 65 white walking sticks, 40 braille machines, 40 dictation machines, ten computers, 17 telescopes, wheelchairs, and prosthetic legs in 68 schools around 2319 glasses for visually impaired people.

Mr Said mentioned the challenges such as the poor performance of students on national exams due to the poor learning environment, the congestion in the classrooms and the lack of teaching materials, especially for science subjects in preparatory and primary schools.
“Another challenge is inadequate toilets and sanitation in many schools,” said the minister, promising that the government had committed through the ministry to address all challenges in the second year of the eighth administrative phase.

The Minister announced that the funds allocated to the education sector will be used to improve school infrastructure and the learning environment, including building or renovating buildings, improving plumbing, toilets and water systems, and improving the well-being of teachers living on small islands teach.
