Southern Minnesota Initiative Basis searching for functions for early care, training wrap-around grants – Albert Lea Tribune

The Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation, in partnership with the Minnesota Department of Education, is accepting applications for its Early Care and Education Wrap Around Grant program.

This special grant program will help fund comprehensive care and educational opportunities for children up to the age of 8 from underserved and heterogeneous populations.

Eligible organizations work with these children in the 20-county area of SMIF. Applications up to $ 20,000 will be considered.

SMIF received funding from MDE for this program on behalf of the Governor’s Emergency Education Relief Fund (GEER). The GEER Fund provides emergency aid to educational institutions and services affected by the pandemic. All-round services, a system of care management that supports children in all areas of life, is one of many educational offers that the GEER Fund supports.

As a leader in early childhood for more than three decades, SMIF received this funding to distribute grants to organizations in southern Minnesota. Last year, SMIF awarded 28 organizations a total of $ 370,000 through this program.

Funding from this grant can help cover mental health services and support, complementary after-school programs, distance learning programs, and social, emotional, and physical health support. Other permissible uses include training and development to work more effectively and to meet the needs of young children.

Applicants must care for children up to the age of eight from underserved and diverse populations.

“Many young children rely on important all-round services that organizations in our area provide,” said Rae Jean Hansen, vice president of early childhood education. “We are honored to be working with MDE and the GEER Fund again to support the welfare of young children in southern Minnesota.”

Applications must be submitted to SMIF by November 16 before 3:00 p.m. For the application and guidelines, visit or contact Heidi Coulter, Project Manager for Early Childhood Education at or 507-214-7016.
