Schooling is Enjoyable on the Dauphin Island Sea Lab – WKRG Information 5
I always love walking away from something smarter, and that’s exactly what happened to the Gulf Coast Destination this week when I was at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab on the Aquarium of Alabama campus. This place is a shining example that education can be fun and exciting!
To start our day, I had a great chat with Joanne who is an instructor at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab and she couldn’t be more excited to tell me all about the programs that are being featured there. One of my personal favorite programs that Joanne told me about was the Sea Stars Program, a camp that caters to students with special needs. Then there are the Gulf Island Journey Campers, who kindly accompanied us for the first part of our day. It was great to see so many young people looking at the live specimens in the touch tank and having a great time getting to know all of the “cool critters” we have here on the Gulf Coast! However, I should note that the Hermit Crab pretty much stole the show as everyone’s favorite.
After having a great time with Joanne, it was time for me to chat with Mendel, who is also an educator at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab, and it was here that I learned that the Sea Lab was recently named the Official Aquarium of Alabama ! So exciting! But that wasn’t all for Mendel, as she went on to explain that the Sea Lab has 3 different excursions that they offer in the aquarium in the fall. This is her special way of presenting the local ecosystem in addition to the aquarium.
All in all, not only did I have a great time at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab, but I also felt smarter after learning so much about the Gulf Coast aquatic ecosystem!
