Schooling Indictors for Eire Report 2021

Education Minister Norma Foley and Minister for Continuing Education, Research, Innovation and Science Simon Harris announced the release of Education Indicators for Ireland 2021 – which present a comprehensive set of education indicators for the education system in Ireland.

The indicators in this report cover all levels of education, starting with the first years of life through schooling, further and higher education to lifelong learning. The report gives an overview of the work of both the Department of Education and the Department of Continuing Education, Research, Innovation and Science.

This updated report contains data up to and including the school / academic year 2020-2021 (if possible) as well as a review of the development of our education system over the five years 2016-2020.

  • Further education and training enrollments.

    This report presents a snapshot of the entire education system at a single point in time, while also tracking our progress over the past 5 years.

    RESULTS

    Primary and secondary education

  • the rate of leaving certificates at DEIS schools for the 2014 admission cohort was 84.8% compared to 83.8% in the previous year, while the gap between DEIS and non-DEIS schools decreased from 9.3% to 8.6%. in 2019
  • the total number of teachers has increased by over 7,000 from 61,942 to 69,343 since 2016. The student-teacher ratio has fallen from 15.7 to 14.5 since 2016, and from 13.4 to 12.3 in secondary education.
  • The number of pupils with special educational needs in mainstream schools has increased significantly in recent years, from 4,836 in 2016 to 7,510 in 2020, while the number of special educational assistants (SNA) increased from 12,634 in 2016 to 17,713 in 2020
  • the proportion of schools that offer at least 2 foreign languages ​​is increasing, as is the proportion that attest to a foreign language other than French in the final certificate

    Further and higher education

  • the number of trainees is increasing sharply, from 10,445 in 2016 to 19,630 in 2020
  • the number of NFQ Level 8 entry routes (Bachelor) increased to 883 in 2020, compared to 843 in 2019
  • the total number of postdoctoral researchers rose from 9,802 in 2016 to 11,199 in 2020, of which 5,983 were women (PhD and Research Masters, full-time and part-time).
