According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, more than a dozen states made changes to education funding in the past year.
“We have seen many organizations say ‘the weighted student finance model is the way to go’. The other reason we are really driven by it is that we really like the idea of continuing education reform and to do that the money has to follow the students, ”said Sobic. “There is still a reaction on both sides of the aisle to parents struggling with the pandemic and what they did with education.”
Republicans’ focus on education is as the party seeks rebuilding after nationwide losses in 2018 and 2020. Suburban women fled the party during the period coinciding with Donald Trump’s presidency, as evidenced by the Democratic legislative gains in suburban Milwaukee.
Education was the most controversial issue in the recently passed 2021-23 state budget, with Republicans increasing funding for public schools by less than a tenth of what Evers had requested. Evers eventually signed a Republican budget that pumped hundreds of millions of new dollars into the state funding formula, but will effectively lower property taxes instead of adding money to county budgets due to state-imposed revenue limits.
The budget also released more than $ 1.6 billion in taxpayers’ money, which Republicans intend to use in the next two-year budget towards a much larger increase in education funding.
