Kari Stampfli, the district’s senior nurse, told the school board on Friday that due to supply chain issues, the district does not have enough tests to meet expected demand. As of Friday, the district only had 3,000 rapid antigen tests and 7,000 polymerase chain reaction or PCR tests, which are more accurate but take longer to get results. The district has around 26,000 students and 5,000 employees.
Wisconsin’s largest school district, Milwaukee Public Schools, announced Monday that the return of students to classrooms after the vacation will also be delayed due to an increase in staff who tested positive for COVID-19.
The district with around 75,000 students has set itself the goal of returning to face-to-face classes on January 10th.
Beloit School District canceled classes on Monday due to a shortage of bus drivers, but classes are expected to resume on Tuesday – although the district expects the transportation challenges to continue throughout the week.
Most students in Dane County, outside of Madison, returned to their classrooms on Monday. Superintendents in multiple districts said any entry point to online-only learning would depend on the number of cases and the manpower they can provide.
