Mason City Schools Board must make an immediate decision on the policy based on decisions about a federal vaccine mandate. The federal government announced at the beginning of November that companies with 100 or more employees would have to require employees to submit a vaccination certificate or to be tested for COVID weekly by January 4th.

On November 6, a federal appeals court blocked the compulsory vaccination.

A federal appeals court allowed the COVID-19 vaccine mandate to continue in a 2: 1 ruling on December 17. Mason City trains vaccine policy after court ruling

The Mason City Community School District put a vaccination policy on hold following an announcement by the OSHA.

The School Board can take an immediate decision based on Policy 209.2 stating: “If the Board adopts a policy in an emergency situation, a statement of the emergency and the need for immediate adoption will be recorded in the minutes. The Board will have full discretion determine what constitutes an emergency situation. “

The vaccination policy states that the district requires all employees, including alternates, to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or have a weekly negative COVID-19 test and wear a mask while at work. This directive would take effect immediately.

Employees who have received a two-dose vaccine must mask and test until vaccination is complete. COVID-19 tests for employees would begin immediately. The mask requirement begins on January 10th.

Precautions are being taken for those who cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons, or if there is a medical need that requires vaccination delay, or because of disabilities or religious beliefs. Staff will be expected to provide proof of one of the exemptions in order to obtain accommodation.

Employees who fail to adhere to the requirements of this policy may face disciplinary action, including termination, under the proposed policy.

The district is required by law to keep records of the vaccination status of all employees, which is confidential material. The Mason City Community School District has approximately 650 employees who could be affected by the policy.
