Janel Heinrich, director of Public Health Madison and Dane Counties, said her agency was not consulted on the district’s decision to return to online classes, but the district has its own health advisory board.

“We weren’t involved in this decision-making process,” said Heinrich.

Several doctors were on the phone with school district staff on Friday to answer questions about the decision to start school online after the winter break. In addition to his health advisory board, Dr. Gregory DeMuri that the district is part of the ABC Science Collaborative, a program that brings scientists and doctors together with schools to help staff understand the latest information about COVID-19.

Instructions are available

Heinrich said nothing about the Public Health Guidelines on Returning to Personal Learning, issued in the fall, which have changed with the increase in cases caused by the Omicron variant. These guidelines include encouraging vaccinations, wearing masks, social distancing, and other practices recommended since the beginning of the pandemic.

Bars, restaurants, shops, courts, libraries, daycare centers, and other public places will remain open with public health blessings. Dane County continues to have a mask requirement for enclosed spaces, with one exception when everyone is fully vaccinated in an indoor area.
