Israeli Particular-needs schooling tech unveiled in UN conference
Athena Fund, a non-profit organization dedicated to the empowerment of teachers in Israel, hosted an event during the 14th UN session of the Conference of States Parties to the CRPD (Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities) last month. The event focused on the use of technology in special education during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. “I urge governments around the world to equip their teachers with computers and iPads and give them the ability to help students, especially those with disabilities,” said Uri Ben Ari, President and Founder of the Athena Fund, at the event . “In special education, advanced technology is not just a teaching tool, it also helps students communicate with their surroundings,” added Ben Ari. Prof. Amnon Shashua, Co-Founder and CEO of OrCam Technologies, spoke about the use of Artificial Intelligence in his company to help people with disabilities. OrCam’s MyEye, a portable, voice-activated device that instantly reads text and digital monitors aloud, has been used in special education. Prof. Shashua also added that OrCam Technologies is currently developing a device for students with hearing impairments that can recognize and isolate a person’s voice in a conversation. The event was attended by personalities such as actress and writer Noa Tishby, secretary. Teachers Union General Yaffa Ben David and Former Air Force Commander Major General Eliezer Shkedi.
