GreaterGood Donates Toys to Youngsters in Areas Hit Arduous by Hurricanes and Poverty

The Christmas season is all about doing things to show others we care and spreading the Christmas spirit. This year, donations from generous supporters have enabled GreaterGood, in partnership with Greater Good Charities, to create lots of good Christmas cheer by sending toys to children at risk and in need in areas hit by poverty and natural disasters.

Recently, around $ 24,000 worth of toys, or about 1,500 toys, were shown to children in need in an area where poverty is high and post-Hurricane Ida reconstruction is still ongoing.

The Outreach Center, a 501c3 nonprofit in Lafayette, Louisiana, accepted the shipments and delivered the toys to the neediest children in their area.

Most of these families did not expect their children to have anything for Christmas because there was simply not enough money to buy toys while they were working to get their lives back on track. Imagine your surprise when these toys showed up!

“Many Thanks! Our customers loved everything, ”said Bruce Gilcrease, Executive Director of The Outreach Center.

The Outreach Center provides shelter, shelter, food and other services to people in need. They provide food for the homeless, ensure safe transport to appropriate accommodation, provide employment assistance and much more.

Their Lighthouse Shelter can accommodate up to 28 adults and children at a time, and they provide accommodation, food, and laundry services for up to 12 months while working with families to help them get the resources they need to get back to get on your feet and become self-sufficient again. Their services include childcare, medical referrals, life skills training, and a host of other necessities.

The Outreach Center also has a rapid relocation program that helps people secure rental and utility deposits, pay their rent on short notice, and more. They even work with landlords to make providing housing to those without outstanding rental records a win-win for everyone. There is a case manager who works with each family on an ongoing basis to make sure they stay housed, keep their bills under control, and still have access to the resources they need.

The Outreach Center does a lot of important work in its community, but one of the projects that people often don’t see as “vital” is to make the holidays happy for children in need and their families. This may not seem like a necessity, but improving work morale can often give families the extra momentum they need to make big changes.

More importantly, a good vacation helps these people in need feel human again as many of them go through a period of exclusion and disregard. It shows them that their community cares and that they are valued.

These kids will outgrow the toys they got for Christmas, but they’ll never outgrow the feelings they felt when they got what is probably the only gifts they’ll get this Christmas season.
