Excellence in Romanian training awarded on the 2021 Principals’ Awards Gala
School principals from Romania were recognized for their exceptional educational transformation projects at the Principals Awards Gala 2021. In this edition, the prizes were won by four educational leaders from Iași, Tecuci, Târgu Măgurele and Pașcani. The rector of the year 2021 is Mihaela Romanescu, rector of the theoretical high school for computer science “Grigore Moisil” in Iași, an award from the Romanian President Klaus Iohannis.
This year’s award-winning school principals have demonstrated exceptional leadership, management and strategic skills through projects with visible results in their school communities. They received awards for equal opportunities, entrepreneurship and innovation as well as the “Principal of the Year 2021” award.
“We are honored that every year we identify and award school principals who are committed and contribute to the continuous development of education in Romania. These leaders must be supported in their efforts precisely because they are an important pillar of the communities to which they belong and which have the ability to drive the progress of the Romanian education system. It is for this reason that we gather around them a significant community, leaders from business, public administration and the non-profit sector, to provide them with the resources they need to enable these important advances for the Romanian communities ”, said Silvia Herman, Program Director at AVE Romania.

In a year marked by trials and tribulations, the event put Romanian school principals in the spotlight, who have achieved exceptional results and achievements through their commitment. Mihaela Romanescu, director of the Theoretical High School of Computer Science “Grigore Moisil” in Iasi, was awarded the “Principal of the Year 2021” award. Together with her team of teachers, she published 3 modern pedagogical guides with teaching examples and carried out 7 projects with funds from the European Commission this school year. Through these projects, she set up a virtual reality laboratory in the school so that the teaching team can create VR lessons for STEM subjects and support students in developing language, business or math skills. It has also developed a project on 3D printing and one on using drone technology in the classroom. The high school’s teaching team has created more than 40 learning software packages in almost all subjects.
“The job of a school principal is to change the lives of students, fellow teachers and the educational community they belong to. Leading and teaching is a challenge that requires a high degree of understanding and patience, personal responsibility, openness to knowledge and strong values. A good school principal has a people-centered approach, accountability to students and the community, integrity in decision-making and objectivity, has moral conduct that emphasizes honesty, fairness and respect, is informed from reliable sources, and combats misinformation in or leading the educational community ” said Klaus Iohannis, President of Romania.

The extraordinary principals who bring progress to Romanian schools
This year, the “Principal of the Year for Entrepreneurship” award was won by Adriana Lefter, Rector of the “Elena Doamna” high school in Tecuci, which was funded by six Erasmus projects with 150,000 euros. Through them, more than 20 teachers and 40 students took part in international Erasmus mobilities and more than 300 students took part in two online mobilities. The projects aim to develop digital, linguistic and STEM skills. Adriana Lefter is also an eTwinning ambassador on a national and international level and became a Scientix ambassador in Romania for STEM activities. Elena Doamna Secondary School also received the “Creator of Education” award in the MINT Discovery Week 2020 campaign.

Cătălin Condrea, Rector of the Special Secondary School in Paşcani, whose work has focused on the design of learning processes and implemented an assistance project through which more than 40% of the school’s teachers develop pedagogical and therapeutic skills for children with special needs, and 30 Parents are involved in the parenting process to better understand their children’s needs. In addition, Cătălin Condrea designed assessment grids through which he monitors the results of all students in the school and uses the data in the educational and therapeutic approach. For children with disabilities he has developed a therapeutic program involving 12 groups of students with severe disabilities and 3 groups of children with moderate disabilities.

The Headmaster of the Year Award for Equal Opportunities was awarded to Adrian Emanuel Silimon, Headmaster of Secondary School No. 4 in Turnu Măgurele, for giving a group of 60 students from disadvantaged backgrounds and school dropouts equal educational opportunities in the 2020 school year, with the support of -2021 Royal Margareta Foundation of Romania. They passed in late 2020-2021 and 200 children with special educational needs were given the opportunity to quality education. In addition, the average of secondary school students in Romanian language and mathematics has increased by 1-2 points, and primary school students are proficient in reading, writing and mathematical arithmetic.

The winners of the gala each receive 5,000 euros for the continuation of the projects started at their school, a guaranteed place in the academy organized by the Association for Values in Education for school leadership and management, training and advice for them and the teachers in their teams for the school year 2021-2022 as well as access vouchers for digital catalogs worth 2,000 euros for a school, offered by Adservio.
The School Principals Gala of the Year is an annual event organized by the Association for Values in Education to support and reward school principals who excel in doing exceptional work and help transform education in Romania, starting at their own communities.
