Cashier with Autism Steps As much as Assist Veteran Who Could not Pay His Full Grocery Invoice
In a touching turn of events, a cashier with autism stepped up to help a veteran who couldn’t pay his full grocery bill. We are so glad that there are stories like these that show that there is still good in the world!
Briar Poirier was already known and loved in the small town of Oxford, Massachusetts, where he worked as a cashier in a grocery store called Market Basket. Accepting his diagnosis of autism, he describes himself as “music, knowledge, video games and compassion”. But he’s grown into a full-blown home hero after being kind to a customer who’s been a little tight lately.

“I was one step ahead of Briar and he took an older man who happened to be a veteran,” recalls Renee Falcioni, an emergency room nurse who witnessed the touching moment. “And the veteran was just about to pay his grocery bill and without hesitation Briar took out his wallet and said, ‘I have this.'”

The senior veteran had used a $ 25 branded basket gift certificate to pay for most of his purchases, but it was about three dollars short of his total. Briar says he could tell by the man’s clothes that he was a veteran and wanted to thank him for his services by paying for the rest of his groceries.
“The gentleman had a few basic needs and looked like he was a little unlucky, and the man fought for our country, fought for our freedoms, our rights. That’s the least I can do for him, ”says Briar.

Renee, who often goes to the store and says that Briar always brightens her spirits and makes her day better, says that the little act of kindness obviously made a big difference for the veteran.
“I turned around and saw the veteran,” she says. “His eyes just lit up. And he shook his hand and said thank you and had a big smile from ear to ear. “

Renee later posted the story on Facebook. She says she later learned that this was not the first time Briar had done something good for a customer in need.
“My parents taught me that hard work, perseverance, and dealing with others can make a big difference,” explains Briar. “I hope that in times of need more people can help each other, whether you are a stranger or a friend. Just to make people’s day better. “
