In addition to the state and local elections, Hudson County will hold a series of local education committee elections in November. Here’s a guide on who’s running and where:
Jersey city
Jersey City will have a major education committee election with three places open after a series of vacancies.
Chairman Mussab Ali and Trustees Marilyn Roman and Joan Terrell-Paige are vacating their seats at the end of their terms.
On the Education Matters list are Paula J. Jones, an adjunct professor at Hudson County Community College who has worked in Jersey City public schools; Younass Mohamed Barkouch, a college student; and Natalia Ioffe, who was the head of the parent council at PS16. The slate is supported by the Jersey City Education Association union, which previously supported candidates on the slate.
The Change For Children slate includes Erika Baez, a former PS26 PTA president who serves on the Jersey City Reopening Committee; Thyson T. Halley, an attorney for the deaf and special needs students; and Doris “Toni” Ervin, Associate Professor at the HCCC. The slate was sponsored by Fairer NJ, a super PAC affiliated with the LeFrak organization, a real estate developer.
The rest of the candidates are Afaf Muhammad, a Jersey City Democratic Organization committee member and mental health first aid instructor; and Vishesh modes. Asad Dar was on the unofficial list, but is no longer running.
