When diet soda hit the market, it was touted as a healthier version of regular soda. Although that myth has now been shattered, there are still many people who think that diet soda is much better for them than other drink options, or even that it has no negative effects on their health at all.

Diet soda is a great way to wean yourself off of regular soda when you’re trying to be healthier, but it’s important to continue the journey and eventually stop drinking diet soda as well as the risks to your health are still high. Here are just a few of the things that regular drinking diet soda can do for your body.

You probably know that sugar is bad for your teeth, but even sugar-free sodas are not good for your teeth because they contain acids that can attack tooth enamel, causing tooth sensitivity and tooth decay.

Lemon and lime flavored drinks are the worst for your teeth, but any diet soda can cause gum problems and tooth sensitivity or tooth decay. And once your tooth enamel is gone, it won’t grow back, making you prone to worse dental problems.

Metabolic syndrome refers to a collective set of co-occurring risk factors for heart disease. Although artificial sweeteners such as aspartame and sucralose, which are often found in diet sodas, are considered safe in moderation for a nursing mother, too many of these ingredients can harm her breast milk and her baby. Saccharin is specifically a sweetener that is considered unsafe for pregnant and nursing mothers. So watch out for this one. There is little research to date on how these non-nutritious sweeteners could affect baby health, but we do know that most of these sweeteners can appear in a mother’s breast milk after ingestion. For many people, diet soda is okay in moderation, but like most junk foods, it can cause serious problems if consumed regularly or in large quantities. Every time you drink a diet soda, you introduce more toxins into your body that it has to work hard to get rid of. So the less you drink, the more your body will thank you.

Many people don’t even realize the potential health consequences of making choices like drinking diet soda until it’s too late to reverse the harm.
